When you pick up a firearm, what do you think about?
I bet nobody thinks “Practical”, right? I know I didn’t. For example: when I picked up my first Glock 19 and felt the light weight and the nice balance between muzzle and grip, all I could think about was how practical this gun was for everyday carry. I spent $500-$700 on a pistol that was designed as a simple workhorse for professionals to carry daily without any frills or tacky accessories.(more…)

The Glock 31 Gen4 is a .357 SIG caliber pistol that is designed for law enforcement and military use. It has a magazine capacity of 15 rounds. The Glock 31 Gen4 also features the new Modular Back Strap design that allows shooters to customize the grip size to their individual hand size. The Glock 31 Gen4 also has the new texture design on the grip that gives it a better grip, even in wet or sweaty conditions. Lastly, the Glock 31 Gen4 also comes with the new GLOCK Marksman Barrel which provides increased accuracy and tighter shot groups. If you are looking for an excellent law enforcement or military pistol that can also be used for self-defense, then the Glock 31 Gen4 is a great choice.

The Glock 31 is a downsize version of the Glock 21. It was originally designed to be used by law enforcement departments, but it has become very popular for personal self defense.
One of the nice features about this weapon is that its slimness makes it easier to carry concealed than other weapons in the same class.
Another feature I like about this gun not shared by many others in its class is that it doesn’t have that annoying internal lock found on most other Glocks except for some select models that are made specifically for carrying concealed (see list below). The location where you would normally find this lock can be seen right behind the trigger in the photo below. I assume they didn’t make an external lock because when you pull out the slide there’s a good chance your finger will hit it and lock the gun.
The Glock 31 is available in both the standard Gen3 and the newer Gen4 version. The only difference between the two versions is that the Gen4 has an extra round in the magazine, giving you a total of 13 rounds instead of 12. I have not personally shot the Gen4, but I have heard that it has a slightly different recoil feel than the Gen3.
The Glock 31 is available in both 9mm and .40 S&W calibers.
One downside to this weapon (and pretty much all Glocks) is that they don’t come with any kind of sights except for a basic white dot front sight. If you want night sights or more precise iron sights, they will cost an extra $130.
Ammunition capacity: 13 rounds (standard) – max 15 with extended magazine upgrade +1 round from factory with Gen4 standard magazine .40 S&W/.357 Sig magazines hold 9 rounds each mag Comes without any sight options except for white dot front sight Factory trigger pull is 5.5 lbs Glock 31 Trigger Pull weight : ~5.5 lbs (22 N)(standard) Other notes: This weapon comes with some of the most comfortable and thin grip available for a Glock Gen3/4, providing great ergonomics and accuracy. This weapon is made in Austria and comes standard with 2 magazines (one with extended base plate to hold an extra round). It’s also sold as a single package which includes two 13-round mags instead of two 10 rounders like other models. The difference between the 9mm and .40 S&W calibers is cost (9mm ammo costs ~60-70% less than .40), size (9mm holds more rounds per magazine), power (most law enforcement agencies use 9mm) and availability (there are many more places where you can buy 9mm ammo than .40).
The Glock 31 Gen4 is a great handgun that is perfect for self-defense and target shooting. It has a lot of features that make it stand out from other handguns, including its recoil reduction system, reversible magazine release, and ergonomic design.
The recoil reduction system helps to reduce the amount of recoil that you feel when firing the gun. This makes it easier to control and shoot accurately. The reversible magazine release makes it easy to switch the magazine release button from one side of the gun to the other. This is convenient if you are left-handed or have another preferred hand for shooting. The ergonomic design helps to make the gun more comfortable to hold and shoot.
Overall, the Glock 31 Gen4 is an excellent handgun that is perfect for self-defense and target shooting. It has a lot of great features that make it stand out from other handguns, and it is very easy to control and shoot accurately. If you are looking for a great handgun that you can trust your life with, the Glock 31 Gen4 is definitely worth considering.

(Author’s note: I actually used and modified the gun and fired about 300 rounds through it on a recent trip to test accuracy and reliability. My written impressions of the gun are based on my experience with more than one similar model, so these impressions should be accurate for any GLOCK 31 Gen4.)
The G31 is not as big as its longer barreled brother, the G41, but with a 3.5 inch barrel, the pistol is designed for those who want a medium-sized pistol that can remain easily concealable while still providing good ballistic performance from a .357 Sig cartridge. Like all pistols in this range (the Springfield XD(M) comes to mind), this pistol is primarily intended as a self-defense weapon, not as a range gun. This is not the kind of gun you will want to shoot thousands of rounds with in order to learn how to operate it efficiently (although that’s something I recommend for all shooters).
The G31 Gen4 comes in two versions: one with standard fixed sights and one which has GLOCK’s “friction reduced” (white dots) self-luminous night sights. The sights are excellent quality—roughly comparable to most other pistols on the market today—and they provide very good shooting alignment even when aiming under poor lighting conditions. They also stand up well over time; I have them on my own G34, and they still look like new, even though I use the pistol frequently. The G31 Gen4 also has a few other features which were not found on previous G31 pistols, such as front slide serrations and flared magazine wells—features which most users will find useful and convenient.
The GLOCK Safe Action trigger system is one of the more notable selling points for this particular line of handguns, and it definitely makes a positive impression on first-time shooters. This trigger system allows the user to safely carry a cocked gun with a round in the chamber (condition One), since pulling the trigger (which results in movement of only three small parts) will not release the firing pin unless those three small parts are positively positioned by pressing on the trigger fully. This gives some peace of mind to those who are uncomfortable carrying a gun with the hammer cocked. If you are one of those shooters, then you will also appreciate the fact that GLOCK pistols have virtually no creep (the amount of slack in the trigger before it actually begins to pull the striker).
Accuracy-wise, this pistol is definitely on par with other GLOCK models I’ve used in the past. It consistently shoots 2-3 inch groups at 25 yards, which is more than adequate for self-defense purposes. Recoil is also manageable, even with +P ammunition. In my experience, recoil was less than what I felt when shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 638 (+P rated) revolver using similar rounds. Trigger pull is consistent and smooth, with a weight of about 5.5 pounds.
Bottom line: The GLOCK 31 Gen4 is an excellent self-defense weapon, blending accuracy, manageable recoil, and trigger pull into a well-designed and easy-to-use package. It’s also backed by GLOCK’s excellent customer service and warranty policies, making it a wise investment for any shooter.
If you are in the market for a new self-defense pistol, I would definitely recommend giving the GLOCK 31 Gen4 a try. You may find that it is the perfect gun for your needs. Thanks for reading!
